On Friday, November 25th at 1 pm, in the premises of the American Corner in Podgorica, we will present the annual Jazz Bulletin
“JAM 2011”, a publication dedicated to our main event – Jazz Appreciation Month in Montenegro. This is an opportunity to meet, talk, and take a look at the fragments from the video of the musical “Nora’s Ark”, which was masterfully performed at the JAM 2011 as a collaborative effort between the Eli Yamin Jazz Quartet, the choral ensembles and ballet group from the Art School of Music, the Ballet “Vasa Pavic”, and the organizational team of the Jazz
Art Association. Come, and bring your friends! In the 75-page bulletin you’ll find interviews with the main guests of this year’s JAM – Eli Yamin and members of his jazz quartet; as well as reviews and articles by Virgil Mihaiu, Vid Jeraj and Mihailo Misa Nedeljkovic, who were our guest speakers on various topics (“Jazz Under the Totalitarian Regimes”, “The Connection Between Jazz and Literature”, “Jazz on the Movie”). We also present the Montenegrin music group Baltazar, along with some young Montenegrin musicians who are successfully studying jazz at the European and American colleges (Iva Kostic, Enes Tahirovic and Filip Gavranovic). In addition to the notions about JAM, we’re bringing you reviews of the events from the last season, such as Carla’s Christmas Carols project and Carla Blay’s and Steve Swalow’s visit to Podgorica at the end of last year; as well as the stories of Eric Legnini and Ralph Towner, great artists who made this year’s fall season so dynamic and exclusive.
We
also present important jazz organizations, such as The Jazz Drama Program and Jazz at Lincoln Center from New York, and higher education institutions – Berklee College of Music in Boston. In addition to interviews with Pat Metheny and Jason Moran from the archives of jazz critic and promoter Vojislav Pantic from Belgrade, in this bulletin you’ll find several articles: about the new books (“Sentimental Journey”); a tribute to the famous vibraphonist Bosko Petrovic; and an article about the 50 year anniversary of the release of the first free
jazz album, often tied to the name of famous saxophonist Ornette Coleman. Vid Jeraj, a critic from Zagreb, introduces hip-hop pioneers “The Last Poets”, and talks with Romanian counterpart Virgil Mihaiu about the influence of jazz music and its connection with the art of music in the Eastern European countries. In the section “In Memoriam 2010/11” we remember the greats: Dr. Billy Taylor, Hank Jones, Abbey Lincoln, George Shearing, and Bill Dixon. The last pages of the Bulletin (68-75) offer several articles on the event “Jazz Appreciation Month in Montenegro” in English, in a respect to our foreign partners and the audience. We owe gratitude to all associates and authors who have contributed their volunteer work to this year’s Jazz Bulletin content.
