JAM 2015

program

JAZZ STORY SOUTH

We have the pleasure to announce the start of Jazz Appreciation Month in Montenegro. This will be our ninth year of JAM.  We are delighted to share with you some details about the upcoming program.

Throughout the month of April we will present jazz programs throughout Montenegro – in Podgorica, Cetinje, Tivat and Herceg Novi – in collaboration with our devoted local and international partners. Inspired by our main international guest, the American jazz violinist Christian Howes and his Southern Exposure project, we present this year`s JAM as having the theme “Jazz Story South” — the jazz that famously was born in the American South; the jazz that comes from the “south” that is Latin America; and finally the jazz of yet another “south” – our own “Southern Slavic” jazz legacy.

Besides the performances by Christian Howes and his quartet in three Montenegrin cities, we will host the Novi Sad Big Band with its “All That Jazz” program in all four host cities of this year`s JAM, culminating in their concert celebrating International Jazz Day on April 30th in Cetinje’s Palace Square.

This year, as every year, we are proud to be welcoming new jazz musicians, ensembles and projects – not only from abroad but also from right here.  In the latter category, of note are young Montenegrin jazz musicians who will feature prominently this year, such as guitarist Filip Gavranovic (who will play with his Graz University colleague Anil Bilgen), and pianist Enes Tahirovic, who will lead his trio with bassist Milivoje Picuric and drummer Martin Djordjevic.  We are happy to share with you their fresh musical talent and enthusiasm.

Our film program this year is dedicated to Latin jazz.  Audiences in Podgorica will have the chance to see some famous movies in the genre, such as The Buena Vista Social Club, Mambo Stars, and For Love or Country: The Arturo Sandoval Story.

We plan to promote the publication of our annual JAM Bulletin 2014, and share many wonderful reviews and articles penned by our splendid collaborating music journalists and jazz critics.

Heartfelt thanks goes to all the marvelous partners of the festival:  the KIC Budo Tomovic Culture and Information Center, the Embassy of the United States of America to Montenegro, Porto Montenegro in Tivat, the Montenegrin Ministry of Culture’s National Commission for UNESCO, the Zetski Dom Royal Theater of Cetinje, the Herceg Fest and HAPS festival, the Yunus Emre Turkish Culture Center in Podgorica, the City of Novi Sad, the Consulate of the Republic of Serbia in Herceg Novi, the Vasa Pavic Art School for Music and Ballet, the Podgorica music clubs Berlin and Blues Bar, as well as our friends in the media , including TV Atlas, RTVCG, Portal Analitika, Vijesti, Pobjeda, and Dnevne novine.
